Welcome to a charming, furnished room that's all set for you! For just $500 a month 💰, you get a neat, private room in a house, complete with all utilities.
modernly-renovated row house, the basement apartment is both cozy-- gorgeous brick walls, upholstered furniture, wall to wall carpet AND spacious, with an 8-foot ceiling.
It has 2 private entrances, a queen size sofa bed in the living area and an in-unit washer and dryer.
Rent includes bi-weekly professional cleaning of bathroom.
Back bedroom contains queen size bed, dresser and closet as well as a door to the private brick-walled patio.
Front bedroom has a queen size bed, dresser and desk.
Behind the brown wood doors is a closet.
Criminal background check is required for monthly stays.
We have a two family house located in west Cambridge (Huron Village section).
It is a safe, desirable, residential neighborhood with easy access to Harvard Square, public transportation, shopping, and the most desirable outdoor areas in Cambridge.
LENGTH OF STAY AND THE RENT: Our family lives in one apartment and we rent the other larger apartment.
For 40 years (since 1984) our family has been renting this larger, all furnished apartment, with no lease to "tenants-at-will" who are housemates and independently share the furnished apartment with other housemates with different rental amounts, depending on their length of stay and size of the bedroom: We ask for just a 10 day notice of leaving.
The longer the stay, the lower the rent, retroactive to the start.
Each housemate gives a best guess as to how long he or she will stay and they pay that rent.
However, if the housemate ends up staying longer or shorter than he or she originally thought, we adjust that rent and make the rent lower or higher and make it retroactive to the start, so the tenant might owe us more money or we might refund money back to the tenant and there is still no lease requirement.
This helps tenants to stay as long as they need and there is no lease requirement and really helps tenants who are not sure when they will leave and cannot sign a lease.
Most tenants stay about 2 to 6 months, but there have been many who have stayed, a year, 2 or more years, and the longest so far has been our current tenant, a retired professor, who has been living here for 8 years and going strong.
HOUSEMATES: Many people have come here from other cities, other states, or other countries to start a new job, do research, finish a thesis, finish a degree, finish a book, look for a long term apartment, buy a house, visit friends and/or relatives in the area, or are between leases for one reason or another.
It is always quiet, as tenants are busy with why they are here.
(There is no smoking and no pets.
) We call it independent sharing as there is no expectation or obligation to do "roommate type things" with the other housemates.
We clean (or have someone else clean) the common areas of the apartment/house, but not the bedrooms, (unless someone moves out).
We supply everything that the apartment needs, paper products, cleaning products, dish soap, hand soap etc.
The apartment comes with bedding, if needed.
There are sheets, pillowcases, pillows, blankets, bedspreads, towels, etc.
We (or someone else) take out the trash, the recycling, the compost, do the snow shoveling, etc.
so there is no need for housemates to get together to discuss "housemate things.
" Tenants just come and go as they like and have more time to accomplish the reason(s) why they are here.
One tenant has been at our house for over 8 years and is a retired professor of linguistics who taught at Harvard for over 30 years, is originally from Turkey, and keeps busy on his computer and with his books.
The other tenant has been at our house for over a year and is a medical student at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, is intending to become a radiologist, is originally from Nigeria.
and is busy with his classes and studying.
APARTMENT: On the first floor of the apartment (second floor of the house) you, along with the other housemates, would have the use of a completely equipped kitchen with an attached pantry (with some pantry shelves labelled with the name of each bedroom) and a back hall with a refrigerator with freezer (with shelves in each that are labelled with the name of each bedroom).
(There is no eating and/or drinking outside of the kitchen.
So, there is only eating and/or drinking in the kitchen and not in any other part of the house, including the bedrooms.
This allows us to greatly lower the chances of getting insects, mice, and/or stained furniture.
) There is also a central room, formerly a "dining room" (now just a central large room with a large table for temporary, extra desk space, if needed), and a living room with a TV.
Then on the second floor of the apartment (the third floor of the house) you would have the use of the shared bathroom (with towel racks labelled with the name of each bedroom).
There is high-speed wireless internet access everywhere and a telephone on each floor.
The whole apartment and bedrooms are fully furnished.
All utilities are included.
In the colder months of the year when the heat in the house has been turned on and the thermostat in the apartment on the wall in the central room (the former dining room) calls for the furnace in the cellar to deliver heat in the form of steam to all the steam radiators in the apartment, it is a convenience that our steam radiators in each room (including the bedrooms) can be pre-adjusted on a dial (on each steam radiator) from 1 to 8 (or 10).
This allows each steam radiator to be pre-adjusted in each bedroom by the tenant according to his or her preference for a cooler or warmer bedroom.
The adjustment has to be done before the heat comes on in each bedroom and the heat only comes on when the thermostat on the wall in the "central" room calls for heat in the whole apartment.
Bedroom photos are of the largest bedroom.
